► A high resolution wave energy atlas of the Mediterranean based on a 10 year WAM simulation is presented. ► Wave energy availability in the Mediterranean and in particular around Italy is examined. ► Distribution of wave energy among sea states is analyzed along the most productive areas in Italy. ► Spatial variation of wave energy distribution at small spatial scale is highlighted

7     Wave energy resources: Wave climate and exploitation , September 2013, Jesus Portilla, Jeison Sosa, Luigi Cavaleri

► We assess the wave energy at two locations with rather opposite wave climates. ► We consider spectral and temporal distributions to derive the actual power potential. ► Results show that the local mean energy is not a sufficient indicator for wave power. ► Areas with uniform input of swell energy appear attractive for energy harvesting.
